How Does an AHU work?

Air Filters : The air being brought in is thoroughly filtered. This is done to remove all potential contaminants. This step is crucial to avert the possibility of particle build up in machines. If precautions are not taken, this may cause equipment malfunction and also lower energy efficiency.
Fans : The purpose of the fans is to circulate air through the air handling unit. They are also known as blowers. Generally, the fans used in AHUs are centrifugal fans. Centrifugal fans or squirrel cage fans can dispense air quickly all over a confined space by creating high air pressure. Large-scale AHUs may also have an additional return air fan which helps in this process.
Heat Exchanger Coils : Air handler coils condition the air that it distributes. Depending on the set point temperature, these coils either heat or cool the air. If the air is cooler than the set point temperature, the heating coil will heat up to make the air warmer until it reaches the required temperature. If the air is on the hotter side, the cooling coil operates to reduce heat and lower air temperature.
